About Us

Going Home Greyhounds (GHG) is a SW PA based retired racing greyhound adoption organization. We limit our adoptions to homes located in the Greater Pittsburgh area to ensure adequate communications, resources, support and proper continued care are available for both the adopter and adoptees  from the start of the adoption process through the life of the adoption relationship. Resources may include guidance and recommendations on vet care, kenneling, training methods tools; questions on behavior, health issues, or volunteering; or even  just the companionship of fellow greyhound lovers.

Going Home Greyhounds, Inc. is a non-profit, all volunteer 501(c)(3), tax exempt organization that provides care for retired racing greyhounds until they are placed in permanent homes.

History

Going Home Greyhounds (GHG) was founded in the summer of 1995 by Jane Drellow and Ruth Patrick. The organization was later incorporated in 1997 and received their 501(C)(3) non-profit status in December of 2001. Jane and Ruth designed the heart and greyhound head profile that became GHG’s logo. Our logo is proudly displayed on the GHG’s special edition Pennsylvania state license plate.

Tender Touch Veterinary Hospital is the original holder of GHG’s kennel license. In 2009, according to the new PA Dog Law Housebill 2525, GHG was able to apply for our own Network Kennel License. We still use Tender Touch as the hub for our group because all our foster dogs receive superior care there.

Over the years GHG has found homes for over 2,000 retired racing greyhounds! Thank you to all our hard working volunteers and all the families who have opened their hearts and homes to one of these precious dogs.

Today

Foster families provide initial care for dogs that will be placed with first-time adopters.  The foster period lasts for one to two weeks until the dog is fully recovered from spay/neuter and dental procedures.  After adoption, support for the new family is available from the foster family and others in GHG.  Foster care is not available for dogs that will be placed with previous adopters.  Instead, the adopter must take the dog as soon as it is available for a trial period of no more than two weeks. At that time the adopter must sign the Adoption Agreement or make the dog available to another adopter.
